Genesis 13: Parting Ways and Promises Made

Posted: January 31, 2011 in Devotionals

At the end of chapter 12, Abe gets kicked out of Egypt for lying to Pharaoh about Sarai his wife. Genesis 13 picks up Abram and his fam making their way east. In verse 2, we learn that Abe was loaded! He had a lot of livestock and loot.

Now Abram was very rich in livestock, in silver, and in gold.       Genesis 13:2

Not only was Abe rich, but so was his nephew Lot. Between the two of them and all their possessions, the land where they settled was way too crowded. You can imagine. Just think of what it’s like when you hang out with your own family in close quarters. It seems like the more people you add to the mix the more likely some sort of fallout is bound to happen. More people, less space…often results in more problems.  That’s exactly what happened with Abe and Lot.

and there was strife between the herdsmen of Abrams livestock and all the herdsmen of  Lots livestock. Genesis 13:7

The land wasn’t big enough for the two of them! So Abe and Lot decided to part ways rather than fight with each other all the time. So, Abram headed to Canaan and Lot settled near the land of Sodom. As they part ways…the LORD restates the promise that he made to Abraham back in chapter 12. The LORD promises to give  Abe all the land that he sees and….more offspring that he could ever count!  Bear in mind at this point Abram has no children. Will the LORD make good on his promise or is he pulling Abram’s chain?

Until next time…
