“Sickos” and the Self-righteous

Posted: October 20, 2010 in Devotionals

The Toronto Star recently ran an article unveiling some of the gruesome details of crimes (including break-ins, sexual assault and murders) committed by Canadian Colonel Russell Williams.

You can find the article in the October 19th, 2010 edition of the paper. Read it if you like but just as a word of caution…the article is pretty disturbing.

Anyway…. Just to give you an idea of some of the things the articles entailed (In case you haven’t heard)….here’s a quote:

“He [Colonel Williams] quickly escalated  from fetish break-ins…to rape and murder. He logged his crimes, kept track of police reports of his crimes and left notes and messages for his victims.”

Another article referred to Williams as “Evil incarnate”. Of all the quotes that I saw, the following stood out to me the most:

“You may be attracted to someone. You may like their eyes, their sense of humour, their face and hair. But you’re normal. Believe me, you are normal. You may be odd, and as a human person, you’re entitled to be, but compared to Williams, you are pristine.”

Take this in: sure… next to some guy who  gruesomly murdered and raped women, most of us look pretty good, but Colonel Russell Williams is not our standard. The LORD is…and he’s perfectly righteous. Deuteronomy 32:4 refers to the LORD as..

“The Rock [whose] work is perfect, for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is he.”

That’s our standard….sinless perfection. Next to that we all fall short. None of us stacks up.

So….listen up: The proper response to hearing the kind of tragedies committed by Col. Williams is not to get all self-righteous and think about how you’re not as bad as he is. Whether you’re a “sicko” or self-righteous or a sweet old lady, the scripture testifies that we are all sinners who stand guilty before a holy God and who need a savior.

Praise God that Jesus saves sinners who repent and trust in him! “Sickos” and the self-righteous alike.
